How To Fight With the Media People or Paparazzi?
May 9th, 2008How do you shoot the best angle without getting blocked or pushed when you are a videographer in the paparazzi?
Yesterday at the Singapore Arts Festival Outreach Launch, I had the opportunity to jostle with the paparazzi to get my best shot.
There were like 10 photographers and video camera people representing the media. Not too many as compared with the Singapore Flyer Official Opening I did last month. The media people wanted to catch the best shot for TV and magazines. I wanted to catch the best shot for my client.
Actually, it was not as bad as most might think. I remember in the old days, you really get pushed around and have someone just plant himself right in front of your camera.
These days, the media people somehow have changed, very friendly, very aware of their counterparts and giving way to each other. (Except for one bad apple I encountered yesterday)
In every launch event, there is only one critical moment, a moment that happen for a split second. This is where the invited VIP does something to start a mechanism to officiate or symbolize the launch. This is the split-second moment where the paparazzi rush in.
Anyway I got all the shots I wanted. Near perfect I would say. And that includes good sound feed.
Here are 7 Videographer’s tips to shoot the best angle in a paparazzi for a launch event:
- Arrive one hour earlier at the launch event venue.
- Speak to the event organizer and know the sequence of the launch program.
- Make friends with the photographers.
- Make friends with the other video camera people.
- Share with them the program sequence that you now know.
- Tell them how and where you are going get your shot.
- Now they will discuss with you how everyone can work together to achieve the same purpose.
So no fighting required, just be friendly. Even if the paparazzi group is too big to communicate with everyone in it, look into the eyes of your counterpart, smile to acknowledge their presence. They will reciprocate by giving way to you.
Happy Shooting!
